field pea

Ethiopian Field pea beans are a type of pulse, with one seedpod containing four or six peas. It has white flowers with blue, violet or pink veins. A pea is a most commonly green, occasionally purple or golden yellow, pod-shaped vegetable, widely grown as a cool season vegetable crop. The seeds may be planted as soon as the soil temperature reaches 10 °C (50 °F), with the plants growing best at temperatures of 13 to 18 °C (55 to 64 °F). They do not thrive in the summer heat of warmer temperate and lowland tropical climates, but do grow well in cooler like central Shewa,Gonder, Gojam and some Oromia regions with high altitude, tropical areas. Field pea bean needs a subtropical or tropical climate with range 800-1100 millimeters of annual rain.

Our field peas are a good source of dietary proteins and energy. The starch content, which can vary from 30 to 50 per cent, is high, and comparable to Angustifolius Lupines. The fat content of Field pea is very low (approx. 1%) as are the levels of fiber and lignin, while the content of soluble carbohydrate (mostly starch) is high. The protein content of Field pea is lower than Angustifolius Lupines at 23%.

The metabolized energy content of our field pea for ruminant and non-ruminant animals is high due to the high content of soluble carbohydrates. In poultry diets, Field pea has a significantly higher metabolizable energy value than soybean meal. Field pea are low in calcium, sodium and possibly copper, depending on soil conditions.
